A long lost friend

Posted by Chris Doelle on April 29th, 2007 under Movie Reviews & TV

How cool is this? I just discovered the star of one of my all-time favorite films, Breaking Away in the SciFi mini-series The Lost Room. I started watching the Lost Room because it has another of my favorite actors from Sports Night, Peter Krause. Okay before this gets too convoluted, the actor I discovered is Dennis Christopher and the film came along at a time (1979) when cycling was my life. It was an inspiration that carried me through thousands of miles. The tale of the Cutters’ fighting impossible odds in the “Little 500″ bike race is one of the top sports films of all time.

I thought he had pretty much stopped acting. Looking at his IMDB profile, it is like a who’s who of shows and films I have never seen despite there being some pretty popular ones. He has been working steadily ever since, but somehow in all that time I have missed each of his appearances… we are talking shows like Profiler, SeaQuest, Murder She Wrote, Roswell, Crossing Jordan, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Deadwood… all shows I have never seen. Okay, I take that back - I did catch him in the Stephen King mini-series IT.

Two excellent actors… one crazy and inventive story… what’s not to like?

And the rain, rain, rain came down, down, down…

Posted by Chris Doelle on April 25th, 2007 under Friends & Family

I should be heading to Houston’s Intercontinental Airport (IAH) right now, but I sit in a holding pattern at my desk. Why the delay? A little thing called Mother Nature.

weatherhouston332.jpg

It’s really amazing to think about how the natural ebb and flow of the planet can throw a monkey wrench into the plans “of mice and men.” In the old days, it would mean maybe having to harvest early or plant late, but as we continue to develop our “society,” the disruption becomes larger and affects more people.

I am delayed because my sister, flying in from Raleigh, is sitting on a tarmac waiting to take off. My sister is delayed because the airline (America West) has been told they cannot head to Houston right now. America West is delayed because IAH is not allowing planes to land during the bad weather. As Houston is a hub for air travel from all over the country and the world, planes from all airlines are circling the airport or sitting on runways worldwide waiting for the weather to clear. Even if cleared up in the next hour or so, the delay will domino through 100’s of scheduled flights until they steal back enough time to get back on track.

It all comes full circle as I am sitting in the weather that is delaying people across the planet.

Oh yeah, and the most important delay of all - Lou is waiting patiently for the weather to clear so we can go on our morning walk.

Pod Music Countdown (PMC Top 10)

Posted by Chris Doelle on April 22nd, 2007 under Podcast

Well, for the first time in over two years, the Pod Music Countdown (PMC Top 10) will be delayed. The show will go out Tuesday rather than today because my network is undergoing some upgrades. The main editing station took a dump recently and we are going to take this time to fix some things across the whole network. That will have to wait until Monday because I am heading to Victoria right now.

Busy day today

Posted by Chris Doelle on April 21st, 2007 under Misc.

Wow… today is going to be a marathon sprint. Yeah, I know it’s an oxymoron, but I will be hustling to get everything done and it will be going on all day… so deal with it.

It started at 5:30 when, as I posted on Twitter, “Crazy tomcat making murderous noises outside - Lou started barking inside - woke up - let him out - chase ensued - cat bolted - all quiet.” From there, it was walk the dog, do the dishes, start the laundry, make some breakfast, answer email, and do this post. It continues with compile the rankings for the Pod Music Countdown (PMC Top 10), record the show, edit it, tag it, upload it, finish the laundry, shower, and shave. That’s just by lunchtime.

After lunch will be the new episode of A Fresh Review, tag it, upload it, and post it. Then its pack the laptop, headphones, adapters, cables, etc. for the Copperheads game, edit some footage from a video production client, output it to .AVI, design the DVD menus, burn it, package it, and invoice it. Somewhere in there, I will also need to pack for the trip to Victoria tomorrow morning, get Lou’s stuff ready, give Lou a bath, and burn a couple DVDs full of MP3 for my brother. (All legal) :)
Then when ‘Mighty’ Mike and ‘Dangerous Dave’ arrive, it will be time to head to the Berry Center where the Copperheads play arena football. We need to arrive shortly after 5:00 PM so that we can setup the equipment, record the pregame show, have the pregame media meal, grab all the needed documents for the show, and start pouring over the stats. The game will kickoff and we will be busy until it ends around 10:00 PM. At the end of the game, we will scurry into the bowels of the arena for the post-game press conference. (Hopefully, to discuss the team’s brilliant performance.) The media frenzy will end about 11:00 PM and we will pack up and head home.

About midnight, I will make it to the house, let Lou out after 7 hours of ‘holding it,’ unpack all the crud from the laptop bag, sit in my recliner to relax a second, remember that I need to post the PMC Top 10, post the new countdown, and call it a night.

All that so I can get up early and head out of town.

(It may seem like I wasted a lot of time writing this post, but I am going to print it out as today’s ‘to-do’ list.)

Bleccchhhhhhh

220px-Berry_Propel_6_Pack.jpgI remember trying Propel Fitness Water a while back and deciding there was something I didn’t like about it. I couldn’t put my finger on it - but now I have. When a friend went on and on about how great it was the other day, I said, “Fine, I’ll buy one and see.” I couldn’t really remember what I didn’t like - one sip brought it all back.

I was instantly struck by the flavor of a diet drink. A quick scan of the label revealed that second only to water in the ingredients is sucrose syrup (sugar.) A little further down though, was sucralose - yeah… the chemically created sugar substitute known by the name-brand Splenda. Why would I want to drink water (even ‘fitness’ water) that tastes like a diet drink? I HATE diet drinks. The aftertaste is akin to eating oil-soaked dirt for me… not very pleasant. I prefer my water to taste like water and I prefer my soft drinks to taste like carbonated sugar.

Now, I am not going to get into the whole debate about Splenda being “fake sugar” or the whole health issue or why companies like Whole Foods refuse to carry any products containing sucralose, I just hate the freakin’ taste.

In praise of P!nk

Posted by Chris Doelle on April 19th, 2007 under Music

pinkheadshot.jpegHi, I’m Chris Doelle, and I am a Pinkaholic… I like P!nk.. not the color… the artist. Ever since she burst onto the scene with her breakout hit “Get the Party Started,” she has intrigued me. Her ballsy attitude, unconventional sexy look, and extremely intense vocals just blow me away. She mixes humor with social commentary effortlessly in “Stupid Girls,” attacks political hypocrisy in “Dear Mr. President,” and of course just generally rocks out in tracks like “Don’t Let Me Get Me” and others.

Attitude goes a long way with me and just like Alanis Morissette made me take notice when she broke out with Jagged Little Pill, Pink has gobs and gobs of attitude. If you like your women with an opinion, if you like your women with a sense of humor, if you like women that ROCK… give P!nk a try. Fun stuff.
