ABC’s new cop drama Life on Mars begins tonight and I have mixed feelings. I agree with my friend Sean who said, “it has been a long time since there’s been a new, good cop show.” In the US, I have to agree. The interesting thing about this ‘new’ cop show is that yes, it is a good show, and yes, it is new to this audience, but it is a remake of a short-lived BBC series.
When the BBC series first came out, I instantly fell in love with it. It was not only original – the premise was great (a modern day cop living in the 70’s era.) It was very well written. The attention to detail was amazing. The series ended after two short seasons with a twist answer to all the mystery. Great stuff.
I can only assume that the ABC version will be decent – I haven’t checked to see who is writing it yet, but if they some from the original team, they will be in fine shape. While I loved all the relative unknown cast in the BBC version, I think I’ll be pleased with the ABC cast – Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli (Christopher from the Sopranos, and Jason O’Mara as the lead character, Sam Tyler.
Will it be better than the BBC version? Doubtful. Will it be entertaining? I am crossing my fingers.
