I am still not sure what to say about The Lone Ranger. I mean, I was a bit biased going in because I had read a review panning it for being “typical Hollywood.” You know what? It was.
I don’t really fault it for being formulaic so much as not deciding what the heck it wanted to accomplish. It came across as a heart touching story, a powerful action-packed thriller and even Monty Pythonesque ridiculousness. It was just too much to keep in your brain at the same time.
I really dislike when revisionists tear down the “good guys” and although Armie Hammer did a fine job as the ranger, they made him out to be 1 part bumbling fool, 1 part bleeding heart and 1 part lovesick puppy. This is NOT the Lone Ranger I knew. Tonto wasn’t torn down so much as made into a superhero. I get that the original Tonto was a simple, flat sidekick character so he nowhere to go but up, but Johnny Depp‘s Tonto was 1 part wise Indian and 10 parts loveable Jack Sparrow wearing a crow for a hat.
They should have just called the film Tonto as he was clearly the feature.
Cute film – weird in places – confusing throughout… not one I will watch again.
