I was at a presentation where one of the fired-up speakers would get the crowd going by saying things like, “Isn’t this the coolest presentation ever? Say YES!” The crowd responds by shouting, “YES!!!!”
Something about that style of crowd management has always struck me as cheating. It’s the public speaker equivalent of the Jedi Mind Trick:
“These are not the droids you’re looking for.”
“Uh, move along, these aren’t the droids we’re looking for.”
Every time a Anthony Robbins or Jack Canfield leads the crowd like that, it just rubs me the wrong way. Even some of my all-time favorites like Jim Rohn and Zig Ziglar would do that from time to time.
You see the technique in evangelical churches as well when a preacher/pastor will punctuate a sentence by saying, “Can I get an AMEN?”
Well, just like the self-help gurus, just because you are speaking about religion doesn’t give you a pass. As Dawn said when I brought this up to her, “You gotta earn an Amen. When you say something worthy of it – it will be there.”
