When I first heard that Netflix was producing the Daredevil original series, I have to say I was excited. What can I say? I’m a superhero fanboy through and through. This is NOT the lame Affleck movie – this is something quite different (and better.)
Yes, Marvel has always been my favorite universe of masked good guys, but I have to admit that DC’s Arrow was a wonderful surprise to me. The idea of a much darker storyline never really appealed to me before… but it sure works with Arrow.
It seems that Daredevil is Marvel’s response to that dark hero genre and I have to say it is a good answer.
Charlie Cox (The Theory of Everything , Boardwalk Empire) as blind attorney Matt Murdock works very well. I also like his sidekick (Elden Henson) for the comic relief and the opposition to Murdock. The two work well together as Netflix does a great job of being true to the comic book feel.
My friend, Manny, was talking with me about the title sequence which he called, “an awesome title sequence on par with Panic Room and Black Sails.” I responded calling it, ” the best opening in the superhero genre.” I mean, really – check out this title sequence:
I really can’t wait to see the transition from his make-shift costume to the full devil one. This trend is another one that I dig… the evolution of heroes like The Arrow, The Flash and Daredevil from normal people to costumed crusaders. It makes much more sense the way this current crop of shows have evolved the characters.
I have read some reviews saying that Daredevil moves too slow, but I like it just fine.
As I mentioned earlier, it is much darker than previous Marvel offerings as it gets quite gory at times. The only thing I don’t care for is the occasional curse word that seems to be included just to make it sound edgy – it’s just unneeded.
Needless to say, I will be watching to see how it develops. What are your thoughts?
