Are You Ready to Get Rid of Your Junk?
I have been a proponent of minimalism for years and frankly marriage sort of derailed that whole thing. I think it is time to get back to some basics now.
It was watching the film Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things that reminded of how things used to be simpler when I had fewer things. It wasn’t about doing without. It was about doing with just the essentials and making sure those essentials are great quality.
So to take that next step, I am going to try a couple things. One is called Project 333. You can click the link to learn all about it, but in a nutshell it simply means to only wear 33 items over the course of 3 months.
What is included in the 33: clothing, accessories, jewelry, outerwear and shoes
What is not included in the 33: rings or other sentimental pieces of jewelry that you never take off, underwear, sleep wear, in-home lounge wear, and workout clothing (you can only wear your workout clothing to workout)
I’m not going to follow the suggestion that you pick out your 33 items and then box up and tape everything else. Instead, I am going to just keep track of the things I wear to see how close to the 33 I come.
I will officially start on January 1st and this will be a good test because I have some traveling planned. This will force me to pack light (which is a good thing anyway.)
The other thing I am going to do is the 30-Day Minimalism Game. The idea is to get rid of things you don’t need over the course of 30 days. The trick is that you increase the number of ditched items each day. Day 1 = 1 thing, day 2 = 2 things etc. up until you are getting rid of 30 things on the final day. When its all over, 465 things that were just taking up space will be gone from your life forever.
You can throw it away, give it away, donate it, sell it – it doesn’t matter how you get rid of the stuff. The only rule is that you have to have it out of your life by midnight of the day.
It will be super easy the first few days but I don’t think I’ll have any problem because although my clutter is tiny compared to many I have seen, I still have way too much extra stuff.
