Is La La Land as Good as Reported?
After watching La La Land sweep the Golden Globes, I went from slightly intrigued (based on trailers) to absolutely curious about this musical. Could it possibly be as good as purported?
I had the opportunity recently to check it out and my first impression was that the reason Hollywood is to big on La La Land is because it’s about them. I mean, its kinda like asking the NFL to vote on the best sport or asking Starbucks if they like coffee.
Don’t get me wrong, I like musicals – The Blues Brothers is one of my all-time favorites and I totally dig classics like The Music Man and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Behind the gimmicky songs and over-the-top direction in this one, there is a cute little story that could have been told without the gadgetry.
No, the story alone wouldn’t have won all the awards. It also didn’t do anything to showcase the talent of the cast. (It was a great cast – Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, J.K. Simmons and a host of others.) It took the entire package to make this a Hollywood salute to itself.
In short, this is an interesting little escape if you are tired of Netflix binge watching – but nothing worth all the awards. That said, it is fun and I enjoyed my time. The dancing was a high point even if the songs weren’t real “stick in your head” tracks*.
And for the record, I didn’t like the ending.

- City of Stars is the closest thing to a memorable track.
