I saw the book Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography and thought, “that’s a cute gimmick.” When I found the book available in audio, I had to see how they handled the skipping around.
I haven’t really been a fan of celebrity autobiographies but this one was fun. It is a clever way of delivering some history while keeping tongue firmly planted in cheek. The info about his life is interesting but the comedy is what kept me listening. Yes, when he mentions his affinity for Steven Bochco TV series I was with him – I loved Hill Street Blues and to a lesser extent L.A. Law. I was never a fan of Doogie Howser M.D. and didn’t realize it was a Bochco production or might have given it a chance.
All the gimmicky schtick sections (audio card tricks etc.) of the book actually work. Yes, he does come across as quite full of himself, but that too is part of his schtick. As celebrity biographies go… it is okay.
