I have discovered something about myself. I am very competitive. Okay, those who know me are saying, “duh!”
Don’t get me wrong, this is not a new thing. I have been competitive for as long as I can remember. The subject came up recently however when I was discussing scripture reading with a friend. I have always had a hard time remembering to or making time for scripture reading.
What I proposed to my friend (I’ll leave his name out for now since I haven’t been given his permission to mention it) that we make it a contest. We each vow to read a chapter in our scriptures each day and the first one that remembers after 2pm to text the other one what scripture he read and what it was about gets a point. At the end of each month, whoever has the most points is treated to a meal by the other.
The act of making it a contest could be just the motivation I need to set aside time for reading. We will see how it goes between now and the end of April. Hopefully, it will work and we both will do much more reading. Hopefully, it will inspire us to not only read more but prompt some discussion about what we’ve read.
Regardless, when a new contest is at hand, I get pumped like Conan the Barbarian when he was asked, “What is best in life?”
“To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!”
Yes, I am a bit competitive!
