I picked up the book The Plot to Hack America: How Putin’s Cyberspies and WikiLeaks Tried to Steal the 2016 Election by Malcolm Nance thinking it would shed some light on the Russian attempts both real and perceived to hack into our democracy. Yes, I know the subtitle should have alerted me that this would be a very one-sided look at the events. I know… how silly of me to expect anything that takes an honest look at an issue without slanting the information toward one “side” or the other. I guess those days are gone.

Yes, Nance takes a deep dive into the dealings of the former Soviet Union and this former naval intelligence officer unveils a government that is probably more invested in the spy game than at any time. This part of the book is fascinating and fact-based.

What follows however, is a very left-slanted view of the 2016 election. Yes, the Russians worked hard to destabilize our election and thus our country. It is something they have never stopped trying to do here and around the world. But to imagine their goal was singularly to put President Trump in power is myopic at best.

The Russians are intent on returning to the top of the heap in the world stage and the United States is part of that intention. Yes, we are a big part, but a single part nonetheless. Donald Trump is not the end-game. He was simply a convenient lightning rod for Russia to focus. They are doing as much to foster unrest in the country through groups like anti-fa and other left-leaning radical groups. If Hillary had won, they would be doing the same thing riling up controversy online for the other side.

Read this book for the reality that we are at war with Russia. It is a war of spycraft and technology instead of AK-47s and AR-15s, but it is a war just the same. Just make sure you look paste all the clearly politically-motivated “conclusions.” On second thought, I told you all the important stuff… just skip this one.
