After covering Speed Fest ‘08 for This Week in Houston last weekend, Tony D. and I met the owners of Thunder Hill Raceway just north of San Marcos in Kyle, Texas. We talked in the pit area after the races for a couple of hours and it looked like we might be able to help each other out a bit.
Ron, Aubrey, and I headed over there earlier in the week to talk with their Marketing Director and the next thing you know we were taking turns doing laps on the track. Fun stuff.

Saturday, I took a trip out to Houston Motorsports Park with Tony D. and we met the Oswalt family for a night of racing. The racetrack is a paved oval and the night of racing was a blast.

I was covering Speed Fest ‘08 for This Week in Houston and Houston MetBlogs and I definitely will be returning.
One of the cool aspects for the fans is that prior to the last two big races, the infield was opened up so that everyone could come out, meet the drivers, touch the cars etc. (Being a member of the media elite, I already had access.) I grabbed a quick photo with Kristin Bumbera who went on to finish fourth in the main event.

NASCAR cars don’t have headlights. Did I just discover a little known fact, or does everyone already know this? Maybe I am just late to the party, but I noticed while watching the Coca-Cola 600 that the headlights are actually decals. It stands to reason… what they heck do they need headlights for? I guess it also sells the illusion that they are indeed “stock” cars. In reality they couldn’t be any further from stock without being an airplane.
I have never been a big fan of watching car races of any kind, but for some reason this seasons Nextel and Busch series races have caught my attention. One of the first races I saw this year had rookie J.J. Yeley (former Sprint car champion) doing well in Busch car and he became my favorite. I noticed he is running the Nextel in todays race in Charlotte.
Again, maybe everyone knew about the headlight thing… I just found it interesting.
