Logan’s team, the HCRA Wimberley Texans varsity team took on the Dripping Springs Tigers this morning in a scrimmage and they looked great. Sure, there were a few miscues but overall I am very impressed with his team. The defense played stellar, allowing only one play for over 10 yards and shutting down the Tigers whether they tried running or passing.
Logan played cornerback and did a fine job. He certainly didn’t look like a kid who had never played organized football before.
I couldn’t be prouder and can’t wait for the next one!
That’s right, it is time for football in Central Texas and both of the boys are about to starting playing in the HCRA football league. We went to pick up equipment today and the first practice will be on Monday.
I am SO stoked about this that I can’t stop smiling. The other way cool thing is that both of them were able to get one of the numbers I wore when I played football. I really couldn’t be prouder and can’t wait to cheer them on.
I’ve managed to keep dropping the weight despite some trips to the “fattest city in America.” Houston, Texas. At last weigh-in, I was 208 pounds - a full 32 down from when I moved to San Marcos.
I only recently started to actually do strenuous workouts. Up until now, it has all been about 1) lowering my caloric intake, and 2) getting back into cycling. I added P90 X last week and while it has been kicking my butt, the results are starting to show.
Don’t be mistaken here - there is some photographic skill going into getting this shot. Everything from setting the lighting right, shooting from the right angle, and yes… some serious “sucking in.” It also didn’t hurt that I had the shirt as a souvenir from the Nike Football Camp I was at this morning (as media, not participant) and they seem to be designed to make you look like you’re in better shape. Whatever it takes though, I am happy that my body is getting closer to how I would like, and who knows - maybe one day, I’ll be comfortable taking my shirt off in public - haha.
It was a three year wait, but it is finally here! Terrell Owens is no longer a member of the Dallas Cowboys. I swore off watching America’s Team - my team - until they parted ways with this cancerous addition to the team. The team is cancer free now (unless you count that niggling growth known as Jerry Jones) and it is time to celebrate!!
Hey Jerry Jones - T.O. didn’t get you into the SuperBowl, he didn’t even get you close. It seems like all the moves you have made with the exception of hiring Jimmy Johnson have been horrible.
The good news though is that the Cowboys have come through and I feel confident in giving the team my support once again.
It was a joyous game for the fans of the Carthage Bulldogs as their team defeated the legendary Celina Bobcats in the final high school football game to ever be played at Texas Stadium. For the staff, fans of the stadium, and the media folks who grew up with the stadium, it was sad - the end of an era.
No rest for the weary however, as I have to catch some shut-eye before heading to Houston for two more championship games later today.
As you may be aware, we do the video production work for the Lombardi Awards - we follow the finalists around for a day and half, filming everything they do. It is a great event that is highlighted by the athletes and dignitaries touring Texas Children’s Hospital as well as the M.D. Anderson Children’s Cancer Center. These giant men melt like a snowman in Southtown when they meet the kids in the oncology wards. It reinforces what the entire award is about. It’s more than great football players, it’s about raising money to fight cancer and for 39 years the Houston Rotary Club has raised millions through this amazing program.
In addition to the serious mission of the group, there is a lot of fun. When you see these guys play on your TV Saturday afternoon, it’s hard to remember they are just kids themselves. Each year, the groups have been, to a man, fun to be around. I was especially pleased to see Ohio State linebacker, James Lauraniatis return after being a finalist last year. It was good to see him again.
Oh yeah, one of the side perks is things like this:
Yes, that is Brooke Daniels, the 2009 Miss Texas USA winner. In addition to being extremely easy on the eyes, she is a witty, funny, and talented communications student at Sam Houston State. We talked about her career after college and I have a feeling she is going to go far.
Tonight is the big award banquet featuring dozens of high-profile sports figures and we are filming and producing the live video. Should be a lot of fun.
Sometimes when you review a movie, you have to take your own beliefs out of it - this is just such a case. Go Tigers! is the story of high school football in Massillon, Ohio. It chronicles the 1999 season, but the subtext is the city and its passion for high school football.
Being a huge fan of ‘Texas’ high school football (the gold standard) and football in general, I figured I would like the film. Where it fell short for me was not in the claims I dispute, but in the craft of film making. Too many of the scenes were staged to tell the story - this is the first rule of documentary films - don’t ‘make’ the story, ‘find’ the story.
It actually took me two viewings to finish watching Go Tigers! because I fell asleep the first time. This is not wholly the film’s fault as I was tired when sitting down to watch. In the end, it was an interesting film - nothing particularly moving about the content, but something to watch if you are a big fan of high school football.
Now as to my disagreements with the claims - the best football town in America? Come on. There was nothing in that city that I haven’t seen in HUNDREDS of small towns in Texas. Towns getting behind their high school team is a phenomenon across all states. And yes, I have seen cities that make a BIGGER deal of their team than Massillon.
I think it mentioned that the Tigers were 22 time state champions and that they had won it like 11 out of 13 or something like that (don’t quote me on the numbers.) All that says is that there isn’t much good competition. The best in Texas just won their 8th state championship - partly because football is SOOO much better in Texas and partly because of the sheer volume of teams you have to get through to win it in the Lone Star State.
