As your virtual Chief Marketing Officer, I bring you the absolute best information about marketing your business. This time I am going to talk a bit about blogging as it relates to business.

Virtual Chief Marketing Officer, Austin, TexasIf you think SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is something you must have – you could by just buying into the huckster’s hype.  I am going to upset a lot of people with this article, but SEO=SCAM.  Okay, not all the time, but for the most part when someone comes to you selling SEO, you better hold onto your wallet!

The whole concept of “optimizing” your content for search engines smacks of gaming the system.  In the end, all the search engine (Google) is looking for is for you to be the content desired by someone doing a search.  If someone tells you they can “get you on the first page for your keywords,”  they are trying to game the system.

One of their tricks is to do a search for terms without much competition (That means NOBODY IS SEARCHING FOR THEM!!!)  Sure, they can get you to the top for the phrase they came up with, but that doesn’t get you customers.  If you’re a plumber in North Austin, you need to be found when someone searches “plumber North Austin” not “north Austin civic association.”  (That is the actual Low Traffic suggestion by Google’s keyword tool.)

If you modify your content to match the civic association, sure you will get to the top of the search on Google for that… but NOT WHEN SOMEONE IS LOOKING FOR A PLUMBER!!

Like I said, the SEO community of charlatans will rip me for this post, but I’m interested in helping my clients actually do business, and their tactics have to be called out.
