What I am going to talk about is the economy. It is something that has bounced around in my head for some time.
As I am a businessman, and have been for the last 30 years, it is a subject near and dear to me.
I won’t profess doom-and-gloom nor will I get out my pom-pom and start saying how great things will be. This is simply my take on where things are heading.
With the economic downturn, a very big change started. People were unemployed. Those who kept their jobs started living in fear. Small businesses either died out or learned to live lean. The most important result of this downturn was that people lost their faith in “the company store.”
It became clear that you could not count on retiring with a company. Heck, if you did, you couldn’t count on the company honoring their retirement promises.
So what was the upshot of this shattering of the illusion of big business? People started relying on themselves! Yes, people started side businesses. People quit shaky jobs and ventured out on their own. We quit trusting in Big Brother to protect us and started to fend for ourselves. This is HUGE!
Seriously, this is a monumental shift back to the mindset that founded this country. You remember those “founding father” guys… they were self-reliant. They were small business owners. They took the bull by the horns and stood up for what was right and did so with the understanding that if something was going to happen, it would be up to people. THAT is what made America great and THAT is what I see returning to our county.
Okay, so I guess I am doing a little rah-rah cheerleading here, but it is not for the state of the economy… not for the moves of our elected (?) officials… it is for self-reliance… it is for people owning their results. That makes me happy!
