I knew that August: Osage County wasn’t going to be real upbeat, but with the cast (Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper etc.) figured it would be well done. It was. It is difficult to choose who turned in the best acting performance, but I expect Streep and Roberts will be solid favorites come Oscar time.
Director, John Wells, who has a long history as a writer and producer in television had an excellent cast and an excellent story for this – his second film. It is a gritty look at a very dysfunctional family that with either make you grateful that your family is so unlike this group or bring you to tears as you see similarities.
It is a great dialogue driven film that relies on this great cast to deliver. There are no special effects, no monsters, no CGI, no time travel… just excellent writing and excellent acting. You even get Benedict Cumberbatch in a role so different from others he has made popular that you will come away with a new appreciation for his acting skills.
Plan something upbeat afterward or at least plan to dive deep into your popcorn and M&Ms to keep up your spirits.
