made to stick. dan heath, chip heath,Made to Stick is the type of book I love.  It covers why we do things.  That interests me from a marketing standpoint because that is what I do for a living.  That also interests me from a purely psychological standpoint.  This book has both.

While it covers a lot of the same ground as Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, this book gives a nod to Gladwell by using some of the same terms, but takes things in a slightly difference direction.

Chip (a Stanford business professor) and Dan (a teacher and textbook publisher) use a host of case studies to not only explain their theory but cause it to stick.  The acronym they devised to make it stick is SUCCESS.

1. Simplicity
2. Unexpectedness
3. Concreteness
4. Credibility
5. Emotions
6. Stories

As a tool for marketers and advertisers, this is an excellent book.  As a look at why some ideas survive and others die, this is an excellent book.  As an interesting read, this is an excellent book.

Aw, heck… it’s just an excellent book all around.
