The Act of Killing is on many of the Best Films of 2013 lists so I gave it a try.  It was interesting (albeit extremely loooong.)  I am not sure I would call it a “good” film, but it certainly was eye-opening.

The film tells the story of former Indonesian death squad leaders as they are quite candid about the atrocities they performed on their communist enemies.  It is an eye-opening glimpse into the mind of evil.  It also touches on how circumstances can make people do things that others would find unthinkable.  This film is not a reenactment, not a dramatic retelling… it is the actual murderers telling their story.

As a documentary, it is nothing special.  It jumps all over the place and is often confusing.  As a look behind the scenes at people committing truly evil acts, it is like seeing a car wreck – you can’t avoid looking.

Depending on your views, it can leave you feeling depressed or disgusted or it can leave you feeling better about yourself and your decisions.
