3 Days to Kill is a new movie starring Kevin Costner that Dawn and I went to see with her folks. While it was entertaining, it lacked in a lot of areas.
The action sequences were fun. The comic lines mixed in with the action worked very well as they weren’t schlocky like Stallone or Schwarzenegger – they came off as natural. We were all trying to figure out where we had seen Hailee Steinfeld before and afterward IMDB revealed she was Mattie Ross in True Grit and Petra in Ender’s Game. She did a great job and even Costner turned in a solid performance.
Where I had problems was with the weak storyline, over-the-top spy genre dialogue and yes, even his name… Ethan. Isn’t that a bit overdone in spy/secret agent films? Amber Heard‘s character, Vivi was great to look at but sooooo flippin’ cheesy. Even the car chase scenes were pretty lame. They came across more as car commercials than chase scenes.
Oh… and note to Hollywood – lose the scarfs used by leading men. It didn’t work for Brad Pitt in World War Z and it didn’t work here. The first guy I see wearing one now, I am going to laugh out loud.
If you remove Costner from the film, it drops way down in rating, but his ability to put reality into a weak character and story salvaged it.
