The Talent Code: Greatness Isn’t Born. It’s Grown. Here’s How by Daniel Coyle is the perfect kind of book for me. It covers one of my favorite topics – learning. I absolutely love Coyle’s analysis of what really makes someone great at something. It isn’t natural talent. It isn’t some inborn skill. It is a combination of things, but each of them are available to everyone.
The idea that the ceiling on our skills is not set at birth is revolutionary and refreshing.
Coyle suggests that three things are required for anyone to be great at something:
- Deep practice – structured, intense practice that breaks a task down to its component levels
- Ignition – some spark or inspiration that couples an intense desire to accomplish with the motivation to do the work
- Master coaching – an outside sage/guide that has a disciplined approach to improving students
As you can see, to really become great at something, you need help – but with this blueprint, Coyle has laid out what is needed.
Whether you are reading as a parent looking for the best way to help Tommy achieve his/your goals, or to unlock genius in yourself, this is a great read.
