I was expecting to like Edge of Tomorrow, the new sci-fi flick starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it is.
It is a slippery slope that a director heads town when filming anything involving time travel. It is so easy to get all jacked up in paradox or to lose track of who knew what from what existence… it is rarely pulled off perfectly. Don’t read that wrong – I don’t think this was perfect, just pretty darn excellent. Sure, there was a logic hole or two, but if you came to the movie wanting everything to be 100% perfect and realistic, it would be a pretty boring film.
The uber-cool new bad guys – the Mimics – take monsters up a notch. Kinda like 28 Days Later… took zombies from the steady, plodding walkers to insanely spazzed out runners, this film takes movie monsters to a new level of frenzy.
Excellent special effects put you right in the action – I’m sure it helped that we saw it not only in 3D, but in IMAX 3D. The written was really good with a great mix of comedy, frustration, drama and action.
I know that Summer just started and declaring it the best film of these isn’t really saying anything, but hey – it’s true… so far.
RATING 9 out of 10
