The Hundred-Foot Journey was a date-night film that was kind of a surprise to me. The entire outing was a surprise as I got a call in the afternoon at the office by my wife who said, “You should come home now and we should go see a movie.” You don’t have to ask me twice – I was out the door almost before the phone call was over.
I had seen the previews and thought it looked good. Heck, it had Helen Mirren and she is always a pleasure on the big screen. The biggest surprise however was all the excellent performances by the other lesser known actors. I think my favorite was Om Puri – the curmudgeonly father that eventually befriended Mirren’s character and more.
It was a classic story of people who disliked each other from first moment they met and then grew to like, respect, trust and eventually love each other. The real love story here however, was a love of food. This is a fun, encouraging, heart-warming and enjoyable film. It was the perfect date night film.
In fact, in what appeared to be a pretty weak Summer of movies (no real blockbusters,) this was another excellent film. I thought the quality of the average film this Summer was better than usual, and this continued that trend.
