Born Standing Up: A Comic’s Life by Steve Martin is just what you expect. It is a look at the life of one of the world’s greatest comics. Too much? I don’t think so. Martin has built an amazing career and I would venture is known well worldwide.
Is he that much more talented than the thousands of lesser-known comedians? No. He will be the first to tell you – as he did in his book, ““Thankfully, persistence is a great substitute for talent.”
This book, more than anything, is a book about working hard. It is about having a goal – working hard toward that goal and not quitting. It is about taking advantage of opportunities and working your butt off.
Yes, it is more than a motivational or inspiration cheering of work ethic. It is a vulnerable expose of Martin’s real life and a historical look at his single-minded pursuit of the stage. This book focuses mostly on his life as a stand-up comic, but there is much more. From his first gig at Disneyland selling guide books to stardom on stage, screen, in print and more… Martin has only grown his audience.
It is a good read.
