I have been looking forward to Cary Elwes’ book, As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride since I first heard it was coming out this year. Afterall, The Princess Bride is one of my favorite films since it came out in 1987. It is probably the most quoted movie by my generation and younger and easily mine.
The title led me to believe that I would read about a bunch of “behind-the-scenes” hi-jinx and insight into these lovable characters that are a part of me. I did. It included everything from casting and initial meetings to final wraps and all the injuries along the way.
The most memorable information for me had to be the stories that Elwes included about Andre the Giant. His character, Fezzik was probably my favorite, “It’s not my fault I’m the biggest and the strongest… I don’t even exercise.” My favorite line of his was, “Anybody want a peanut?” (If that doesn’t make you smile, you need to go back and watch it again.”
This was one of the quickest reads I have had in awhile – not because it was short… because it was good. The personalities behind the characters are every bit as engaging as the ones they played and Cary does a good job of telling.
If you loved The Princess Bride, you will love this book. It brought back so many great memories and was a very fun read.
