Looking for a team-building exercise?  How about a disaster movie?  That’s what we did as an office last Friday – went to see San Andreas and it was actually a good time.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson showed he is more than an action hero in this role.  It actually required him to have some acting chops and he delivered. He never took off his shirt and beat the heck out of someone – he just acted like a concerned father, husband and first-responder.

alexandra daddarioAlexandra Daddario (who is just unbelievably pretty) played his daughter and completely took me out of the story.  Maybe its just the guy in me, but every time she came on the screen I totally lost the storyline and focused on how pretty she is.  She did a great job so I don’t fault her – sometimes it is just a casting issue.

Distractions aside, SA delivered exactly what I expected.  Ton’s of great CGI crashing, crumbling, destruction and heart-pounding close calls.  It was everything that was cool about 2012 (without all the weirdness) and then some.

If it were mine, I would do a few things to make it a better film:

  1. Cut out the entire opening helicopter rescue scene.  It was the most unbelievable in the things they did.  (That chopper would have crashed and burned a dozen times over with the things they did.)
  2. Downplay the hard sell on the bad guy (Ioan Gruffudd.) It was just too formulaic each time they sold us on the fact that he was a coward, greedy, prideful etc.
  3. The product placement was just waaaaay too forced.  Between the various ‘car commercial shots’ to the HUGE ad for Apple computers – that too, just kept popping me out of the story.

Again, it was a lot of fun and a welcome break from what was a very productive week.
