Sometimes You Can Go Back to the Well

I finally saw Star Trek Beyond and I have to say that the first couple minutes left me in serious doubt about it. It was campy. It was silly. It was downright goofy. I was thinking, “oh well, this one is going to suck,” but I decided to hang in just a bit.

It was a good thing I did because just a few minutes later, I was like, “holy crap!” I won’t provide spoilers but trust me when I say, “this one is worth watching.”

Yes, Uhura wiping the floor with creatures that man-handled everyone else was a bit too over-the-top in terms of girl power, but I get it. That is the time we live in and as someone close to me says, “it serves men right for the way they’ve behaved for so long.”

Yes, there is a big scene that was 100% designed to make fanboys say “HOLY _____” but that smacks of an almost identical scene in Star Trek: Generations.

Yes, the scene of Kirk riding a motorcycle (only the first clip) was the worst CGI motorcyle scene since the one I wrote about (Jurrasuck World) a couple years ago.

The makeup work on all the new creatures was excellent. They didn’t look like Hollywood movie creatures or even CGI at all – far more realistic than anything I have seen recently.

The story was fresh and well told.  It was very well directed and had just the right amount of gratuitous Trekkie stuff mixed in with what ends up being a really good movie.
