Netflix spent a ton of money ($60 million) producing the Brad Pitt film, War Machine. This was intended to be a death knell for traditional movies as top talent, scripts and money moved away from the big screen to the small screen subscription model. War Machine probably set back that transition a decade. It is that bad.
I am a fan of Mr. Pitt and loved him in too many roles to mention – but this has to be his worst outing since Cool World. His satirical portrayal of General Glen McMahon is hard to watch. Pitt is a good actor, but you can’t see it through his oh-so-bad gravely voiced and completely awkward take on the real life General Stanley McChrystal. His supporting cast too is nothing more that a bunch of cardboard stereotypes attempting to be “cheeky.”
Sure, there are setups galore that could lead to an interesting story, but none delivers. After three attempts to sit through this drivel, picking up each time where I left off – I had to throw in the towel. My life is too short for such bad stuff.
In addition, WM attempts to teach us what is wrong with our politics and just comes across as preachy, condescending and insulting.
In attempting to show that a star-driven, mid-budget film can do well on Netflix – War Machine will have people flocking to blockbusters in traditional cinema. If you want to see Brad Pitt in a good war movie.. go see Fury (9 stars) and leave this soup sandwich alone.
