First let me say I am not a trekkie… not even close. That said, I am a fan of the Star Trek universe of shows. My favorite was probably Deep Space Nine.  I absolutely hated Voyager.

So, as you can guess… I was a bit skeptical of this latest incarnation – Star Trek Discovery.

Well, so far I really like it. I like that the Klingons are updated again. I like that the Federation characters are not all perfect. They are flawed and have a normal range of motivations. I also like the tech in the new series. Jason Isaacs as a very flawed captain has the potential be very interesting.

Sure, there are a few things that are either just so-so (like the holographic phone calls that seem very ‘old school’) or unsettling (like what appears to be sexual tension between Klingons, L’Rell and Voq.)

So far, I like the series. I like that they didn’t immediately follow Hollywood protocol and make Michael Burnam (Sonequa Martin-Green, who is probably best known for her role in The Walking Dead) as another female captain. Instead, they made her the main character that like the rest of the cast is not perfect. She is intriguing and has a good mix of humanity and ‘issues” to work through.

Here is a quick video that introduces the crew of the new show:

Again, I am only four episodes into the series so there is plenty of time for the thing to jump up to an “all-time great” or slip to “piece of crud” but for now, I will keep watching.

PS. The one thing that annoys me every time I notice are the boots. They have while outer soles so they look like tennis shoes. It makes the whole outfit look less “uniformy” and more like workout clothes. Remember the boots from the other series? Me neither cause they didn’t stick out like this!
