2017 Top Songs

For the eight straight year, I am chronicling the songs that I’ve played the most over the past year.  This is NOT a list of the most popular songs in the world, in America or even in my town.  These are the tracks that I played the most in 2017.

There are tracked by last.fm (a site I discovered back in 2005) that keeps track of the songs you play on iPod, computer, iPad, iTunes and streaming sites like Pandora and Spotify etc.  It is simple to connect the service to the other services and then you never have to deal with it again – other than to look at all the glorious data (yes, I’m a nerd.)

Here are Chris Doelle’s 2017 Top Songs:

Interesting facts from 2017

  • Last year’s #1 track, Buy Me a Boat repeated as the #1 this year – a feat that had never been accomplished… and it had more plays this year than last. (I really like that song)
  • The #1 artist for the year, Train had only 2 songs in the list.
  • The bottom song in our Top 20 list would have come in at #11 last year
  • The country music trend continues – number of country songs in top 20: 2014 (2), 2015 (2), 2016 (9), 2017 (9)
  • Last year Maroon 5 had 4 tracks in the list – this year 0.
  • The total songs played for the year was 3,833 – down from over 4,700 last year.
  • The trend of songs having nearly identical numbers of plays is caused by the Spotify playlist habit. I add tracks that interest me to my playlist of over 600 tracks and periodically add/remove to keep the list fresh. Many tracks have stayed on the list from last year or even earlier.
