I came across District 9 on Hulu the other day and nearly skipped right past. I was sure that I had already seen it. The film came out in 2009 and I clearly remembered the setup – the aliens – the look and feel. I just couldn’t remember anything more than that.

This film is a gritty twist on alien invasion stories. Yes, there are creepy looking aliens. Yes, there is awesome alien technology. Yes, there is shooting, explosions and splats galore. But, there is something more… a good story.

First, I loved the fact that it didn’t have a who’s who of well-known actors. For me, that really helps me get “in” to the new setting. I was impressed with Sharlto Copley as the lead character Wikus. He took the character in a wide arc from goofy nerd to action hero – and did it all believably.

If you haven’t seen it (or are not sure if you have) this is a must-watch. I am sure this film ranks high in my all-time scifi flicks. High enough that I think District 9 is worthy of a 9.
