ROCKETMAN was promoted quickly on the heels of Bohemian Rhapsody and appeared to be another in the same genre. The only way these two films were similar is that they were about musicians.

Despite being about a living artist rather than a dead one, Rocketman is a much sadder tale. The biggest difference however, has to be that this is a musical. No, not a film with a lot of that artist’s music… this is a tried and true musical. You know – the type where the actors break into song to tell their story.

I have to say that I really DO like musicals so this doesn’t bother me a bit. In fact one of my favorite movies of all time is a musical – The Blues Brothers.

So what about this film? Well, first it is brilliantly acted by Taron Egerton as Elton John. The supporting cast is exceptional as well. My big issue with it was the story. It was just too depressing for me.

Yes, there were moments when it was interesting… perhaps even a tad exciting. But mostly, it was a downer. The rating I give it below is because of the talent, creativity, music and work that went into pulling it off.

This is not a film I will be watching again. I love sad songs and Elton’s are some of the best, but life is too short for sad movies.
